RHODES DAY 2: Snorkeling in Healing Caves and Cruising at Sunset

"Think of the long trip home. Should we have stayed at home and thought of here? Where should we be today?"

-Elizabeth Bishop, https://www.poemhunter.com/poem/questions-of-travel/

Josefin and I woke up around 10 this morning to grab some breakfast and take a walk along the beach. We climbed around ancient structures that lined the shore, and once we passed those, we were hit with a wave of advertisements for different expeditions. We were lured into a fairly cheap speed boat trip to Kalithea, a city nearer to the middle of the Island, where we got to snorkel through deep caves (in what our tour guide said was the clearest water in Greece), eat lunch on the beach, and explore some more ancient stone structures which didn’t have an explanation.

Our tour guide told us that people come to Kalithea when they have Arthritis because they believe that the waters heal you.

After the trip, we booked a mini sunset cruise, which turned out to be SO beautiful and relaxing. The music was romantic and they served great wine. Josefin and I were surrounded by couples on the cruise, and we both agreed that this would be a great honeymoon spot. The water around us and a beautiful dark green, and the small waves were like ripples in a silk cloth.

As the sun lowered in the sky, the water changed to blue and the sun cast a long thick beam of gold onto it. Josefin pointed out that the golden beam across the water looked like the flag of Sweden.

That night, we decided to stay in and watch a movie without drinking, but that was not to be. The head of our hotel realized we were home, so he passed us shots through our hotel window. Later, he passed us a whole bottle of alcohol, which Josefin poured most of into the sink since we felt bad we couldn’t finish it. We later found out that the head of the Hotel was also an alcohol maker who owned some sort of vineyard where he made liquors and wines. After watching half of the move “Danish Girl” and taking a couple shots, we headed to bed.
